I bought two items from a very well known store in England, one t-shirt and some headphones. Costing £27
When it came to paying for the items at the checkout there appeared to be a problem.
I used my debit card for the transaction, the card is in good working order, plenty of cash in the account and was used succesfully that day in a previous establisment.
The store clerk asked me to insert the card into the chip and pin, yet the card was not registered. Troubleshooting such as re-inserting and cleaning the card followed to no avail.
The clerk then swiped the card using the magnetic strip and printed off a merchant receipt which I was asked to sign.
I signed the receipt as directed to which the clerk attempted to print off what I believe to be the customer receipt.
Unfortunately the receipt did not appear, then the clerk exclaimed that there seemed to be a problem. Concerned I asked if it could be my card. The clerk stated that it was not my card, that it was the till.
She pressed escape on her keyboard. I asked,
"Has that transcation gone through", she then replied,
"No" and turned the screen round to show me that it had not gone through, unfortunately I cannot read in store tills so this meant very little to me.
She then swiped the card again and printed off abother merchant receipt, but left on the desk and said it was best not to sign that receipt just yet. This was left next to the signed receipt in front of me.
The clerk then showed me another tills' transactions, displaying the transactions made, but not received by what I assume was the debit company? (I am fairly in the dark as to what I was shown)
Again I asked whether the transaction had gone through, to which the clerk swears it did not.
The clerk made a call out to the supervisor. The supervisor, who I can state is the assistant manager, attempted to rectify the problem.
The second clerk then asked me to use the chip and pin again on another till and the transaction went through fine.
I asked will I be charged multiple times for the transaction to which the clerk replied,
"No, as they have not gone through but I will print off the receipt for you"
The clerk printed off a long receipt, mentioning something about the other two receipts not printing out and wrote on the 'processed' receipt;
'(*Clerks Name*)
Assistant Manager
Problem with till while processing the transaction
*Signature*'
Again, with added worry, I asked if the clerk was sure the other two transactions had not gone through. The clerk replied by saying that,
"This till has some problems sometimes, there is a one in a million chance that it will go through (strange thing to say?) but if it does, then you will have to come back next week and show this receipt."
With her reassurance that the transactions will not go through, I left. Though I left with an uneasy feeling that this may not be the end and I may have to travel all the way back, which is not a short journey, to the shop to deal with this problem if it arises, which it unequivocally should not.
I am writing this on my part as a record of the events, to cover my bases if such an unfortunate event as an extra two withdrawls from my current account happens and what I could do as a customer.
The transaction took place today which means it will not appear in my statement for maybe another two days, I am very worried and would rather know in advance on the procedure on dealing with such a clumsy problem if it arises.
Thanks in advance

I know absolutely nothing about this. I've been reading about paypal and merchant accounts online and now my head hurts. I plan on calling to talk to someone on the phone but I was wondering if someone here could answer my questions.
I run a home business (Massage Therapy) but I also do house calls. I have clients who would like to pay by credit card (so far I've been only accepting cash and cheque). What's the best option? Paypal or with companies like this site: http://www.simplepaymentsystems.com/services/service.php (doing face to face transaction). I plan on being able to bring something with me so they can swipe their card. Unless there is a way of them paying me online without having a paypal account.
I've read Paypal is the worst because customers need an account and set up is just a mess and steers people away. Is anyone in the same business (or some other service similar like makeup artist or contracting) and knows what to do?
Help =S

“Economy”
The Elizabethan Era was one where many changes were brought on. The age of mercantilism slowly closed, while the age of capitalism was rising. The change of life brought surprise to many, but mostly the “commoners”. The Elizabethan Era introduced a brand new way to live and experience life.
Manufacturing was done on a small scale - in households or small shops instead of large factories (Lace 35) . Labor was relatively cheap.- principally because it was widely accepted that commoners should expect a low standard of living (Singman 31). Manufactured goods, on the other hand, were comparatively expensive. There was almost no mechanization, so the vastly increased hours of labor more then negated the lower rate of pay. Moreover, prices would fluctuate according to time and place. (Singman 34). The growth of trade during Elizabeth’s reign and the movement towards a money economy (selling goods for cash instead of trading for other goods) led to growth in the number and the wealth of merchants. It was the merchants and the amount of wealth they controlled, who gave the cities economic power (Lace 37). Between 1500 and 1789 the trade in North American furs and hides was profitable in Western Europe for various people, such as: furriers, hatters, and leather makers. Medieval Europe had met it’s own
Moran 2
demand for furs until the supply of suitable animals was exhausted and buyers resorted to “common pelts” such as rabbit or in expensive furs from the east (Dewald 500).
Classical economic thought dominated the field from the 1820’s to the 1850’s. Ricardo’s life spanned the close of the age of mercantilism and the rise of capitalism. Ricardo’s interest in economics’ came after he read Adam Smith’s classic, “The Wealthier Nations“. (Powell et al 778) While Ricardo’s ideas have long since become out moded, he was the first to systematize the study of economics. Through his work he inspired both those who supported laissez-faire economic policy, such as David Hyme, and those who opposed it, favoring instead government control of the economy. Ricardo thought inductively, working from abstract principals to establish economic laws. For example: he saw that population was increasing, which resulted in humans competing for resources (Powell et all 780). On the other hand, Adam Smith’s approach to his work was first to do a historical study of his subject, and then to advance in the area, often building on the work of his contemporaries. Though, It has been shown that he was a most curious human being, Adam Smith displayed, in the writing of The Wealth of Nations, a “profound knowledge of the real occupations of mankind.” A situation that Smith observed in France, was one that was essentially brought on by taxation, a system that made people “exceedingly miserable,” a stem, which, in years to come, would bring on the French Revolution, and to bring, in it‘s wake, Napoleon. Thus Adam Smith, steeped into history and philosophy by writing his famous book “The Wealth of Nations“ (Landry).
The Elizabethan Era was a gate that let in currency of gold and silver coins, as opposed to just trading. Also, new economic idea’s were brought on with such people as: Adam Smith and David Ricardo, paving the way towards capitalist ground. Today’s economy is influenced by the Elizabethan Era’s economy in many ways.

Okay, I played Runescape for a year and a half.. quit.. and recently began playing again. In the past, I could never make any money, and now, I still CAN'T! I don't know what to do, I'm so overwhelmed I don't know where to start. I've tried following some guides and stuff but they've led me nowhere. I'm level 89 and can't make money to save my life, and we all know Runescape isn't fun unless you have money to spend on fancy items =D
I don't know what to merchant on the Grand Exchange, I've tried cow hides, soft clay, coal, vial running, and nothing has been making me good profits. My goal is to save up about 15m to buy a Santa then work from there. I would like some tips, advice, something to get me going! Tell me how you do it! If you don't want to say where other eyes can see, leave your screen name and we'll chat in-game. I would really like to be "financially stable" on this game.
If anyone could help me, I would really really appreciate it, I'm tired of being stuck because I have no cash.
Thanks in advance

I own a restaurant and need some extra money for remodeling etc . I was told you can get a cash advance on your credit card merchant account instead of going through the process of a regular loan but I'm not sure. Anyone heard of have any experience with these? Do you need good credit to qualify?
I am asking specifically about credit card merchant advances, not fundraisers, grants etc.

In response to the outbreak of WWII, the US revised its neutrality statutes that
A) belligerents could purchase weapons as long as they paid for them in cash and took them away in their own ships
B) American merchant vessels might be able to carry cargoes to belligerents' ports
C)no weapons could be sold to any nation participating in the European war
D) only Britain, not Germany would be able to buy weapons from the US
It can't be D I think it may be C and possibly A
6) Which of the following did not occur during the first few months of American participation in WWII??
A) The US unleashed its massive army and navy and brought German and Japanese aggression to halt
B) Germany sank hundreds of Allied Merchant ships in the North Atlantic
C) Nazi U-boats bottled up Chesapeake Bay for six weeks
D) Nazi armies continued rapid, forceful, and seemingly unstoppable advances in Europe and North Africa
I think it's B
6 is A? thanks! but I thought about the massive atomic bomb was a threat to the navy...maybe I got some confused.

I'm not sure on these, I've missed a few days, because I've been sick..

I am thinking of getting a job with a company, either Amerimerchant or Aspen Merchant Capital. These companies all promise that you can make approx $2000 per week and I am just trying to see if it is realistic. I am looking for any and all information on this. I would not be selling merchant processing, just the merchant cash advances
Yes this is similar to factoring. I am trying to gauge whether 2k per week is feasible

I know that there are companies out there that will give you a cash advance based on your future credit card sales. Well I accept credit cards through paypal only this time and work from my home. Are there companies that will advance me on paypal sales? We hope to be moving to a retail store by year end, but at this time our business is based on the internet. A lot of them can't work with paypal or won't work with us b/c we're home based, but we do bout $600,000 in sales a year about half credit card via paypal.

For example, do online cash advance companies just charge a credit card for cash, pay the transaction fee to the credit card company and charge their own fee to the customer; thus, a cash advance company would take no risk? Then, could a person create a site to do the same and just undercut the margins in this business?

I made an error on a check and went over my cash advance limit. I then tried to rectify it plus fees to my university (wrote a new check that is WITHIN my limit). The credit card company cancelled the SECOND check wrongly and gave me a credit. Three days ago they REASSESSED the fee. I called and the first person I talked to told me that the supervisor came and decided that I SHOULD be assessed the fee and reinstated it. Then I talked to the supervisor and they said my school (university of michigan) attempted to run the RETURNED check again. My school is telling me I don't owe them any money and that the check hasn't been returned. All they have assessed me is the first check that was over the limit (which suprise suprise, they didn't try to run through again after it was returned)..so someone is making a mistake.
What do I do??
Edit: I meant to say that they refunded me 29.00 for the mistake THEY made. Then when I called after the reassessment they said they didn't make a mistake the first time. Why refund me money if they didn't make a mistake?
It's a cash advance credit card for my payment of tuition to my school. Not a checking account.
And yes, you do need a checking account if you don't own a business.
How do I place a stop payment?
